Who We Are: A team of engineers and technicians in SwRI's Space Sector who facilitate space science research through the fabrication and inspection of electronic printed circuit boards for spacecraft instrumentation, avionics, and electronics. Objectives of this Role: <ul><li>Manufacturing Engineer to lead printed circuit board (PCB) fabrication of the Space Systems Division.</li><li>Manufacture of sophisticated one-of-a kind systems that contribute to the exploration and research of space, advance scientific knowledge and safeguard our nation's security.</li><li>Fabrication of printed circuit boards in a low-volume, high mix R&amp;D environment to meet wide-ranging requirements from quick turn prototypes to space-flight certified electronics with a meticulous attention to detail.</li><li>The ability to function as a contributing member of a Fabrication team providing guidance and expertise to area personnel.</li><li>Establish new processes and provide ongoing process improvements, root cause analysis and corrective/prevention actions in an R&amp;D engineering environment.</li></ul>Daily and Monthly Responsibilities: <ul><li>Maintain space flight hardware PCB assembly processes, procedures and training that includes cleaning and soldering of both Surface Mount and through hole electronics to IPC-A-610 Class 3 and IPC-J-Std-001 w/Flight Addendum standards.</li><li>Responsible for the qualification, operation, preventative maintenance, trouble shooting and repair of area equipment to include solder jet pasting, pick and place, vapor phase reflow, selective soldering, component storage and optical monitoring equipment.</li><li>Support Controlled Stores operations providing safe and effective storage and control of Program and Division components and inventory.</li><li>Provide technical expertise in soldering and manufacturing techniques, methods and processes to fabrication technicians.</li><li>Establish and perform process controls, measurements and product inspections.</li><li>Documenting and reviewing Division Operating Processes and procedures including written work instructions.</li></ul>Requirements: <ul><li>Requires a Bachelors degree in Materials Science Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Process Engineering.</li><li>Six Sigma, ANSI/ESD S20.20, IPC-J-STD-001, NASA 8739, Lean Manufacturing are preferred.</li><li>3+ years: PCB assembly and fabrication. Knowledge of electronic components, soldering and solder reflow principles and requirements, ESD control and mitigation. RESEARCH ENGINEER - SR. RESEARCH ENGINEER - Process/Manufacturing of Space Flight Electronics

Who We Are: The Space Systems Directorate is a multidisciplinary team of engineers, program managers, and technicians to develop spaceflight missions, spacecraft, spacecraft avionics systems, spacecraft payloads, and lighter than air systems. The Spacecraft Assembly, Integration, and Test (AI&amp;T) section is comprised of a team of engineers, engineering technologists, and technicians who assemble and test the spacecraft to verify the design and deliver the flight product. Objectives of this Role: <ul><li>Support the development, analysis, and testing of systems related to experimental and numerical modeling of supersonic and hypersonic flows, focusing on airbreathing propulsion components.</li><li>Engage in the design and operation of sophisticated test rigs for supersonic and hypersonic experiments, contributing to advanced research in aerodynamics, thermodynamics, and propulsion.</li><li>Apply knowledge in high-speed fluid dynamics, shock wave interactions, boundary layer theory, and combustion processes to optimize designs and enhance performance in propulsion systems.</li><li>Utilize state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software such as Ansys Fluent, STAR-CCM+, and OpenFOAM to simulate flow conditions and analyze aerothermal loads affecting vehicles and components at high Mach numbers.</li><li>Integrate experimental insights with simulation data to validate models and develop predictive capabilities for propulsion systems operating in extreme environments.</li></ul>Daily and Monthly Responsibilities: <ul><li>Provide cross-disciplinary support to multiple projects within the field of high-speed aerodynamics, focusing on both computational and experimental tasks.</li><li>Conduct design, optimization, and validation of high Mach number flow regimes using both CFD and experimental techniques.</li><li>Contribute to the design and commissioning of supersonic and hypersonic test facilities, including facility upgrades and instrumentation enhancements.</li><li>Assist in the execution of experimental test campaigns, including data acquisition, processing, and analysis to support model validation.</li><li>Be a problem solver that exercises creativity and independent judgement in determining approaches to solve a wide range of technical problems.</li></ul>Requirements: <ul><li>Requires a Bachelors, Masters or a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related engineering degree. 1 year experience require with MS degree, 0 years experience required with PhD in relevant areas.</li><li>2-5 years: Experience in high-speed aerodynamics, including both experimental and CFD modeling, particularly regarding supersonic/hypersonic flows. Demonstrated experience in either experimental OR numerical work in supersonics or hypersonics. Experience in both preferred, but not required.</li><li>2-5 years: Experimental: design, operation, and troubleshooting of supersonic and hypersonic test facilities like continuous, blowdown, shock tubes, Ludweig tubes, arc-jet tunnels, etc. Subsonic wind tunnel experience also considered.</li><li>2-5 years: Numerical: Proven ability in using CFD software such as Ansys Fluent, STAR-CCM+, or OpenFOAM for high-speed aerodynamic simulation and analysis. Unsteady, reacting flow, multiphase, and fluid-structure interaction experience also considered.</li><li>Experience with combustion processes and the design of subsonic or supersonic combustors is highly desirable but not mandatory.
